Scotland’s New 250-Mile Coast-to-Coast Cycling Route

This summer, a new coast-to-coast cycling route of 250 miles will be launched in the South of Scotland. The Kirkpatrick C2C South of Scotland Coast to Coast Route takes its name after Kirkpatrick Macmillan. He was a 19 th century Dumfriesshire Blacksmith who invented the pedal-driven velocipede.

The route will connect Stranraer on the west coast with Eyemouth, located on the east, and become the UK’s largest coast-to coast ride.

Depending on your fitness level, you can complete the route in a few days to up to eight.

Lonely Planet has named the South of Scotland as one of its top 30 “Best Travel” destinations around the globe.

The Kirkpatrick C2C has been unveiled during a tourism event, organised by South of Scotland Destination Alliance. Markus Stitz gave a keynote address, and Esther Tacke from Galloway Cycling Holidays presented a second presentation.

Markus Stitz is the director of Bikepacking Scotland. He said that the south of Scotland is one of Scotland’s most beautiful regions, and offers a wide range of bike-based adventure opportunities.

The south of Scotland was what inspired me to move to Scotland from Germany. “I was drawn here by the wide variety of off-road trails, quiet roads and unique scenery. I also liked the clean air, dark skies, amazing forests and beautiful scenery.”

Paula Ward of South of Scotland Enterprise announced the official name of the route. Paula Ward, of South of Scotland Enterprise (SOSE), said: “Kirkpatrick Macmillan was an iconic cyclist who we are extremely proud of. This new tourism offer is a great way to celebrate his achievements and our heritage.

“Kirkpatrick C2C South of Scotland’s Coast” is just one of many new cycling opportunities that are taking place in this region, along with the arrival of the UCI Cycling World Championships 2023 in the South in the summer.
