Exploring the Mental Health Benefits of Running and Walking on Time to Talk Day

Time to Talk Day is the day we should all talk about mental health. Time to Talk Day is an initiative of the mental health charity Mind in conjunction with Rethink Mental Health illness . It aims to encourage people to talk about mental wellbeing.

After conducting research on the mental benefits of walking and running, two UK sports retailers Cotswold Outdoor and Runnners Need joined the conversation about mental health.

Running and walking can be beneficial for mental health.

Exercise can also improve your mental health. Running is popular because it gives people a feeling of euphoria after completing a run.

Michael Gaston, a Runners Need specialist, says that running is a way for him to unwind and relax. I can forget about the stress of my day and focus on only my next step.

It is therapeutic to be outdoors and breathe in fresh air.

Everyone can benefit from running. OnePoll, on behalf of Cotswold Outdoor, conducted a survey in 2022 of 2000 UK adults. The results showed that 23% of runners enjoyed the positive effect running has on their mental state.

Mark Skelton of Cotswold Outdoor adds: “Our study also shows that the majority of adults – 88% of them – believe it is important to be outdoors and in touch with nature as it is good for your mind.

Being active and getting some fresh air can improve your mood and reduce feelings of anxiety and stress. This is why it’s important to keep in touch with the natural world.

Why do we feel good after running or walking?

Exercise releases endorphins

The production of endorphins, the brain’s feel good neurotransmitters is increased by physical activity.  They are your body’s natural painkillers, and can also boost your mental health.

Running is a great way to improve your mental health because the body produces these chemicals when you exercise. The endorphins released will improve our mood and make us happier.

Positive productiveness

You may find that your list of tasks is overwhelming, but completing a run will help you get things done. Start your day with a productive start, or take a run during the day to help you get more done.

A run can help you feel accomplished, and it can also give you a more productive attitude.

Clearer & calmer minds

Running can help you monitor your mental health because it helps to focus the mind and clear unwanted thoughts. Get some fresh air by going for a walk or running. You will be more mindful and your creative flow will increase.

Self-esteem

Hiking and running can require confidence and willpower. Completing a hike or run, however small or large, can increase self-esteem. You may feel more confident and happier.

Natural benefits

According to a study conducted by the University of Glasgow, “regular physical activity in a natural setting may reduce the risk of poor mental health by 50%”. Fresh air, beautiful views, and time spent in a natural and peaceful environment are all factors that can improve our mental health.

Time to Talk

When you run or walk with a friend, especially when they are next to you, it can help people open up and share what’s on their minds. It could be positive or negative thoughts. It’s often helpful for people to talk about their problems.
